Fat Quality and Feeding Value of Fat for Feedlot Cattle

نویسنده

چکیده

While much attention has been directed at understanding factors influencing the NE value of supplemental fat (Zinn, 1994), alterations in NE do not necessarily form the basis for constraints on supplementation. Indeed, greater concern is often directed at potential detrimental effects of supplemental fat on diet acceptability and feed intake (Brethour et al., 1957; BuchananSmith et al., 1974; Cameron and Hogue, 1968; Cuitun et al., 1975; Dinius et al., 1975; Hatch et al., 1972; Johnson and McClure, 1972; Lofgreen, 1965; etc). Although the reasons for the occasional negative impact of supplemental fats on diet acceptability are far from clear, each time the problem arises attention is drawn to the importance "quality".

The performance and meat quality of Bonsmara steers raised in a feedlot, on conventional pastures or on organic pastures

The effects of production system (feeding regime and time on feed) on growth performance, yield and economics and the effects of feeding regime, pre-slaughter treatment and electrical stimulation on meat quality were evaluated. Sixty Bonsmara steers were divided into three treatment groups, viz. feedlot, organic pasture and conventional pasture feeding. The feedlot and conventional pasture grou...

Influence of level and source of dietary fat on its comparative feeding value in finishing diets for steers: feedlot cattle growth and performance.

Two hundred twenty-eight crossbred steers (304 kg) were used in a 125-d comparative slaughter trial to evaluate the influence of level and source of supplemental fats on their feeding value for feedlot cattle. Dietary treatments consisted of a steam-rolled, barley-based finishing diet containing 1) no supplemental fat; 2) 4% yellow grease (YG); 3) 4% blended animal-vegetable fat (BVF); 4) 8% YG...

BOARD-INVITED REVIEW: Use of distillers by-products in the beef cattle feeding industry.

The ethanol industry is expanding rapidly. This expansion in production of renewable energy also increases production of by-products. These byproducts, primarily distillers grains plus solubles (DGS), are utilized very efficiently by ruminants. When the starch in corn is fermented to produce ethanol, the remaining nutrients (protein, fat, fiber) are concentrated about 3-fold. Whereas DGS is an ...

Adding Linseed to Feed enhAnces the FAt ProFiLe oF BeeF

Feeding beef cattle a ration containing whole flax seeds (linseeds), flax (linseed) oil, rolled linseed or milled linseed increases the alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content and decreases the omega-6/ omega-3 ratio, but has little effect on the saturated fat content of beef. Adding linseed to feedlot diets has been shown to increase the internal fat of heifers an...

Sources of Variation in Subcutaneous Fat Colour of Beef Carcasses

Yellow fat in beef carcasses incurs price penalties in many domestic and export markets. Sources of variation in subcutaneous fat colour of beef carcasses was investigated by objective measurements on 622 carcasses of various classes of cattle. Fat colour was subjectively assessed using a six point photographic colour chart . The majority of carcasses sampled (80.6%) had creamy-white to cream f...
